building an infrared remote for your computer doesn't look that hard. that means you could telnet into your machine to control your vcr... conceivably, you could write a wap app to do the same... hmm, i finally thought of something semi useful to do w/ wap

i have to wholeheartdly agree with goodexperience.com on verizon. while my wireless service was good w/ (the company formerly known as) airtouch, down in texas, with (the company formerly known as) primeco, my service has been downright horrible. in fact, three months later, they still haven't set up my voicemail (this is after calling them a half dozen times, and being told at least twice that tech support would be on the case).

omm:

It seems that people who deliberately deconstruct religion, then exorcise it from their lives, eventually realize that maybe they're not so much smarter than everyone who's ever lived after all. When they inevitably discover that faith has a purely utilitarian value as a way of mitigating the mounting existential dread that arises from simply being alive, they generally resort to creating some kind of half-assed religion substitute. This leads to spiritual philosophies that embarrass everybody, like aromatherapy and everything Jewel believes.

noticed this earlier today from mefi: neat nader ad.

the funny thing is if you do a search for winamp 3 or id3v2 on winamp's forums, you'll see moderators saying that the beta will be out in the next week or so since june. it does look like there will finally be id3v2 support. if there were cddb2 support, now that'd be promising.

ok, i'm going to sleep.

$8/11/2000 09:38:53 PM

looks like lame got id3v2 support last month. now, can eac pipe cddb vars into lame...

eac has an unofficial support page.

$8/11/2000 09:07:43 PM

speaking of music meta info, cddb2 will be very cool.

all things considered, virtual tipping is a much better idea than the spp. it'd be even better w/ micropayments instead of visa cards.

A Brief History of "Rogue", apropos in light of the release of nethack 3.3.1 today. if you have a palm, be sure to snag pocket rogue. you'll thank me during your next long meeting. hmm, a quick search also brings up iRogue, also derived from rogue-clone 5.3, but looks less mature (but still being actively developed. looks like there's a whole sourceforge page dedicated to "roguelikes for palmos."

gamespy has some nice links in their nethack hall of fame entry.

note: on entry (or periodically), search for multiple entry via url and link?

$8/10/2000 09:00:13 AM

crazy cases at quakecon. i would type more but my brain is mush.

i am slowly trudging through more of the elements of typographic style and sql for smarties. also, i have temporarily set leonardlin.com to point here, but i'll probably end up pointing it to a separate server, so i can have stuff that works if my main box goes down. plus, i will should probably force myself to do some cool stuff sandboxy type stuff.

i didn't realize it, but in less than two weeks, i'll be back in la.

$8/9/2000 08:03:34 PM

how nifty.

$8/9/2000 07:43:11 PM

gah, they ripped someone's ear off! if this doesn't make you sick, i dunno what will. the philadelphia independent media center has more info

of course, to put it all in perspective, though, there are extremists, violent protestors who are just plain assholes, as willing to sacrifice your rights for their agenda as any politician...

London Observer: "Hypocrisy is the oxygen of the new imperial order of thought ownership. Every genteel landlord of fenced-in intellectual real estate began life as a thief. Under WTO and US law today, how many products built on the ideas of others could never have made it to market? As Isaac Newton would say now: 'If I see further than others, it is because I stand on the shoulders of giants too dumb to patent their discoveries'." [via davenet]

$8/6/2000 11:44:01 AM

for those not on the up and up wrt to the stuff that went on this past week in philly. i find it disappointing after looking through cnn, abc, and wp, i didn't find any coverage of police mistreatment of protestors. zmag has some coverage. pschmied also has a good summary.

$8/6/2000 11:05:48 AM

i must have missed out on when the multiple windows thing became popular in europe. (from chi-web) admittedly, neither handle closing very robustly, the geri site not doing it at all (suckage) and the levi's site working if you close any child window, but not the parent.

feeling under the weather today. partially it's because of these huge honking bug bites i have on my arm, leg, and neck, which may or may not be related to my general feeling of queasiness.

i'm looking at deepleap, and cool as it is, i can't help but think how much more convenient it'd be if it automatically updated if you left it open and went to a new page. you could probably futz it with a timer checking your main window, but ideally you'd probably do it with the ie search pane or mozilla tool tab. another thing to chalk up on my todo list
