on ice capsThe thick ice that has for ages covered the Arctic Ocean at the pole has turned to water, recent visitors there reported yesterday. At least for the time being, an ice-free patch of ocean about a mile wide has opened at the very top of the world, something that has presumably never before been seen by humans...
you know, it never occured to me, but it really does make sense. why the heck bother arbitrarily limiting varchar sizes on the db when it's not going to save space or have other performance considerations and can be done on the app side.
speak of the devil and he shall call. it has occurred to me that i should perhaps do more personal writing. it seems to me to be one of the more important things that i've been ignoring.
Newbie's Linux Manual: Tar and Feathers - Without the Feathers
so, i was almost successful in posting from lynx. i was checking to see if my site was down (it's not, but i can't get to it from my home system). anyway, after i do a bit of writing, i will be packing up my computer (and the rest of my stuff) and driving back to la tomorrow. i also finally am getting a chance to reassess what i've accomplished this summer, and what i want to do in the coming year. i need to write this down somewhere.
i am also stressing a bit about my system integrity. a friend who has a login on my system had his usc student account compromised. although my logs look ok, and i've since disabled his login, it's still one more thing i don't need on my mind.
saw the way of the gun, the directorial debut of chris mcquarrie. both he and one of the actors, nicky katt were there and said a few words. the movie was alternatively really bleak, and bleakly humorous. really great script, and in the end, a atisfying film experience: ...whether the end is happy or not...depends on how closely you're willing to look at the details.
useless trivia: the official one-sheet was being shown, which had one gun per regulation as opposed to the two gun original.
Hertzfeld spills all about Eazel. there's a part two as well.
hmm, a $99 tivo even makes up for divx and a broadvision powered pos site.
my friend writes much better than i do
as a tangential aside (aren't they all), i have thus far avoided reading house atreides, after seeing some of the reviews when it first came out. i have a feeling that i'll break down sooner or later and read it anyway, but at least keeping in mind that it's it's not canon, but rather just bad fanfic.
heheh, Who would have thought an operating system whose mascot is a cute, smiling penguin could engender such fear?
finally got to reading this michael dell interview. pretty interesting commentary on /.
DVD/DeCSS: MPAA Wins In New York. hmm, illegal to link to code...
ya know peter, admittedly the ted baker online store is slick, but that still doesn't change the fact that i can't bookmark any items i want in my browser. actually, i believe that svg will finally allow a site that's as dynamic as the ted baker store and that integrates w/ the browser ui (ie5 allows dynamic loading of xml nodes, and rewriting the url properly is trivially easy once you can traverse the dom easily (which svg will allow). oh yeah, that's not even counting the amount of integration you can get with mozilla.
from inside: Policy wonks' aesthetic sense has become so ossified by political debate that most of them actually think that show biz exists to convey a message or promote a particular kind of behavior. It never occurs to them that a song or movie may be trying to make people dance or laugh, that entertainment experiences are impressionistic and emotional. Here's a clue -- listening to the blues doesn't make most people sad.
fun salon lotr article. Advance hysteria for "The Lord of the Rings" has reached pandemic proportions among Tolkien readers and the Internet's Ain't It Cool News movie fan-boy set. (There is considerable crossover between those two groups.)
hahaha... the funny thing is that mainsoft needs the windows source code to port office because of all the proprietary hooks...

i'd consider getting one of those vr3 linux handhelds if it had built in wireless...
i felt bad not haveing touched my art project organizer since i've been so busy with work, so i took the hour out of my sleepy time to finish building the index pages and finishing the full project view. i spent a few minutes puzzled about why my join wasn't working when i switched from comma syntax to inner join syntax until after scanning the mysql docs a few times and realizing mysql didn't support inner joins that took join conditions until recently (v3.23.16).

Lego Mindstorm with Linux Mini-HOWTO
my first test of lame 3.86b will be the gattaca soundtrack. i've decided to tweak my settings a bit:
-h --vbr-old -V 1 -b 128 -m j --add-id3v2
i've upped the minimum a bit, sticking to the old vbr code which i've been using, but also switching from regular to joint stereo and adding id3v2 tags. less work to do in helium and mp3ext that way. (eac is the last part of my rip/encode setup, in case anyone's interested)

i had no idea fraunhofer expected to get that much off of licensing. for electronic music distribution, they expect 1.0% of revenue, a minimum of $0.01 / dl, with an annual minimum of $15,000. when they decide to start enforcing that and forcing people on sdmi, we'll be glad there's ogg vorbis. fun @ /.

l.e.o.n.a.r.d. - Lifelike Electronic Organism Normally for Accurate Repair and Destruction
after a weekend of unproductive vignette programming for work, i decided to do something useful tonight, and got started on a simple art project organizer. it's 1/3 of the way there (needs an index, and admin tools), although i might redo the data model to handle versioning / capture date info. right now the whole thing is just 7 tables, but it'll probably be a few more by time i finish.
the forum 2000 x-men review
it's sad to see the forum go. greatest hits are still online for perusal. the last one is a goodie
i haven't noticed it until now, but m18 auto-points (and imports) ie bookmarks. neet.
gahh, there are actually people who want the modern mozilla skin for default?. icky. my vote goes for classic even though voting has menat getting 10+ bugzilla spam letters/day this past week. (mail filtering rules are fun)
